MAY 2026 | During the German Language Month in Latvia, more than 200 students from school choirs across Latvia came together in Riga for a unique German-Latvian singalong concert called “Deutschkoris“.
The project was created and artistically directed by Jöran Steinhauer in cooperation with the German Embassy in Latvia, the Austrian Embassy, the Swiss Embassy and the Goethe-Institut Riga.

Students and choirs from Riga, Talsi, Ventspils, Daugavpils, Ķekava and other parts of Latvia learned German-language songs especially for the concert and performed together at the University of Latvia’s House of Science in Riga.
What made Deutschkoris special was not only the music itself, but the atmosphere around it: young people from across Latvia singing together in German, discovering new languages, dialects and cultural traditions — from German folk songs to Austrian party hits, Swiss dialect songs and Latvian choir music.
The concert combined choir traditions, humor, storytelling and participation. Many students sang in German publicly for the very first time.

Latvian Public Media (LSM) described Deutschkoris as:
“A German-Latvian singalong in the universal language of music.”
The article highlights the spirit of the project and the role music can play in connecting cultures, languages and young people across Europe.
